My Students

My students are attending school in the #1 most diverse school district in the country, according to Niche.com's 2017 diversity rankings. In my class of 25 students, I have nine home languages and 12 ethnicities represented. The children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves- my students value hard work and the opportunities they have, but face many social, emotional, and economic challenges.

My students are developing into internationally-minded learners who seek out opportunities for action.

As an International Baccalaureate PYP school, we focus on interdisciplinary themes that connect our content to our everyday lives. With such a wide range of experiences to share and to learn from, they are getting pretty good at tolerance and empathy.

My class is caring, curious, and motivated. They love team-building activities and practicing their leadership skills. They enjoy math, and the Zumba breaks that come afterwards. They get lost in stories and beg for one more chapter. They love using technology to develop research skills, and to share what they've learned. They are great at making do with limited resources, but have so much potential to achieve more, given the opportunity.

My Project

My students love reading and they love being read to, but they are happiest when they are being read to while following along in their own book.

Having a class set of novels keeps students engaged and interested.

Novel study becomes a community activity and students take the stage. They are excited for their turn to read to the class, and learn to listen respectfully when others are reading. They help each other out when someone encounters a new word or loses their place.

A class set of novels also increases opportunities for interaction with a text. As students are learning to cite evidence from a story, or define vocabulary in context, they need to be able to go back and reread. The work becomes frustrating when they have to wait for their turn with the teacher's copy of the book. With a class set, students will be able to work independently on a project using their book as a resource.
