Going Up North: Escaping the City for Camp Widji

My Students

"Because I want to be ready to help my family, and other families who need help." This is a student response to the question--Why is education important to you? This encapsulates our students and who they are. They come from diverse backgrounds, diverse cultures, and diverse families who mean everything to them.

And they are ready to step up and take on the challenges of the future.

Our diverse student population comes from all over Minneapolis, the United States, and the world. Though they come from such different backgrounds--they find incredible ways to work together and have friendships that cross cultures, languages, and socio-economics.

My Project

For many of our low-income students living in the heart of Minneapolis, experiencing the natural outdoors is not an everyday opportunity. This project will help cover some of the cost of attending the YMCA's Camp Widjiwagan.

Camp Widji is an incredible opportunity to learn about and experience the outdoors and is a treasured Minnesotan experience.

We are asking students to provide $40 each, however, even this amount can put a strain on our families. For this reason, I would like to cover as much of the trip costs as possible with donations to this project.

We want to make sure our 7th graders have the opportunity to join in Jefferson Community School tradition and attend Camp Widji. Students will take part in environmental educational programs to "invest in themselves and an environmentally sustainable future." This trip will encourage students to work together, learn about themselves, and experience the great outdoors--leaving them with powerful and transformative memories.
