Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school English in a high-need community. Nearly all of our students are eligible to receive free lunch because they come from low income homes.

I try to create a college-going atmosphere in my classroom. One of the obstacles I face is that my students do not think they can afford to go to college. Those who plan to go to college cannot think beyond going to the local community college or the local university. Changing students' mindsets is what this proposal is all about. I really want my students to see that going to college IS within their reach, and their options are limitless. I want them to aim high and to realize their full potential.

That is why I am requesting several books related to going to college. I have requested financial aid books and books to help them get scholarships. I would also like books that expose students to universities that they perhaps have never heard of. One of the books I requested helps students choose a college based on what major they will focus on. All of these books will help open students' minds and encourage them to go to college.

I am trying my best to help improve my students' lives, and one way I do this is to help them see beyond their community and preconceived notions. So many students have told me that they can't afford college, and telling them that free money exists does not seem to be effective. I think they need to discover this for themselves, and I believe that these books will help them do this. Your help will ensure that my high school students become successful college students. Thank you.
