This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
'You can go to and through college!', is the encouraging cry the educators emphatically shout to our elementary students with pom-poms and college pennants.
Our school is one of a kind.
Even though we are 100% free lunch and have many English language learners, our students have beaten the odds and have produced amazing work and nationally recognized projects. We hold a 'College Week' every year where the staff proudly display their favorite colleges with shirts and decorated doors showcasing fun facts from their treasured alma mater. Even the little kindergarten kids learn the fight songs to UCLA and USC while the older kids start choosing which school they want to attend.
My Project
We would like to take them to Pepperdine, CSUN, UCLA, and even that school across town, USC. By allowing my students to visit these campuses they have seen us showcase, they will have an actual image and schema for what college is really like. They will walk the halls with actual college students, visit the dorms and gaze at the artwork and rows and rows of books in the amazing libraries. They will really start to solidify their dream of attending higher education. We will also get them pennants and pencils to take home and share this goal with their family.
I remember when my mother brought my twin and I to our first university and it made all the difference in the world.
We had something solid to shoot for and now we are UCLA and UCI graduates with our master degrees. My students don't have the home influences that will proactively take them to explore local places of higher learning, so I am taking that responsibility on myself.
Thank you for helping me send the next generation to - and through – college!
