Going the Distance: At-Home Materials for Students

My Students

My class is full of 26 curious, fun-loving students that attend school in the second largest urban district in the state. Our school district is "home" to families that come from all over the world. The parents are supportive and working so hard at home with their children during this unprecedented time.

My amazing first graders are currently on week 6 of distance learning.

Most of them are able to communicate with me during this time, however, some are not do to a lack of technology at home. I want to create care packs to send home to reinforce essential first grade skills that do not require any technology or internet access. I want them to feel some reassurance that their community, school and teacher are still here for them. Imagine the looks on their faces when they get a care package made possible from donors like you!

My Project

The materials acquired through this project will be distributed to students. The journals will help reinforce critical first grade language arts skills. The math manipulatives are essential tools for the children to work at home successfully.

I am blessed in the fact that I will have the same group of students next year in second grade being that I loop with these children.

It is my intention that these materials will be given to students when it is safe to do so for Summer Bridge work so that students can continue to hone their reading, writing and math skills over the summer months in an engaging way. Using individual journals will foster a sense of pride and accomplishment as well. I am hoping that they will enjoy doing this work and come back to school with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and proud to show off their hard work!
