Going Green with Poetry

My students need 17 poetry books that focus on the environment and inspire writing.

This project is fully funded

I teach an amazing group of fourth and fifth graders in a self-contained highly capable program. My students are extremely creative and are motivated by novel teaching methods.

I would like to use environmental poetry to inspire writing in my classroom and to support my year long theme: Let's Go Green. Unfortunately, our small school library has few poetry books.

I need an assortment of environmental poetry books that will serve as writing models for my students. I need books such as A Mirror to Nature: Poems about Reflection and Old Elm Speaks: Tree Poems. I selected 17 books that contain vivid language with a strong environmental message. I also selected poems that were written in a variety of styles. After reading each book to my class and discussing the poet's unique style, my students will write their own poetry trying the poet's style and format. My students will find their own poetry voice after being exposed to this large selection of poetry books.
