Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings from my second grade class, (the most hard-working class in the Universe). Our school is located in one of the poorest communities in New York City. Though this is a major obstacle we still try our best!! I am a special education teacher to 11 energetic boys. Most of my students are performing significantly below grade level primarily because what is taught in the classroom is simply not reinforced at home. In addition to that all of my students are battling various disabilities ranging from speech difficulties to attention deficits.

Though our school is located in a highly industrialized community, concerned environmentalist have put forth great effort to create two new parks. During the warm seasons we are able to go to the parks to read and simply to enjoy the scenery and appreciate nature. In the midst of this I noticed that my students have limited vocabulary and background knowledge to describe what they observe. That's when I decided to open up their young brains and feed them with information about plants, vegetables and markets.

I was able to obtain a few books from the public library but had to return most soon after as they were needed by someone else. I would really love to have a collection of books within my classroom that relate to the theme of nature. My past students enjoyed growing and observing their bean plants. They were able to make predictions and test hypothesis based on the work that we had done in just two weeks. At the end of the year we were able to visit a Farmers Market. The students loved it! With the money we collected we were able to buy fruits that most of them had never seen or heard off. We bought fresh, homemade cookies and even got flowers at a discounted price. Imagine the possibilities if I could create an extensive plant unit by incorporating vegetables and fruits and teaching students about Farmers' Markets!

Having these materials in our classroom would mean so much to us. It would be an experience that they would never forget.
