My Students
Knowledge is like a garden; if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested. African Proverb
Our student “green” service-learning club does research & creates garden related activities:K-2 grades: recipes & projects, 3-5 grades: word search and special plant contracts.
Our urban school serves 460 K-5 students: 40% are English Language Learners, 11.8% are in special education, and 7% designated gifted.
52% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, 11.8% are designated Special Education, 7% are designated GATE and 40% of the students are English Language Learners (ELL-LEP/NEP)
Our third grade students (70+) plant, care for, harvest and eat nutritional foods in our school garden. 20 of the students have formed a service club "Green Team" to spread awareness of garden and environmental issues.
My Project
Green Team (student service learning) students will use the environmental reference books to gather information for posters, charts and surveys for all classes. They will create plant contracts for students to care for the sensory gardens & plant light projects. They will learn how to play the Garden-opoly game & share the oral & written directions with other students. All of these activities offer literacy support especially for Language Learners & Special Ed students.
How many times have you heard the phrase "you are what you eat?" What we eat plays a large role in how we develop and grow:our health, energy levels and attitudes.
Gardens are exciting, interactive ways to demonstrate life skills and to develop good habits.
These 20 students (age 8-9) are eager, creative and enthusiastic about the environment. As they learn they also provide service and resources for all the other students.
