Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my school come from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, most being eligible for free or reduced price lunch. We are very fortunate to be in our fourth year of offering music to every single student at our school with one dedicated music teacher at our school site - which, in most places, is unheard of! General music is offered to all students in grades TK-4, and Instrumental music to all students in grades 5-6 every week! Additionally, we have a Musical Theatre program made up of 4th-6th graders and a Modern Band made up of 5th-6th graders. It is beautiful to work with such a diverse student population and to see their excitement every time they enter the music classroom!
My Project
Students in 3rd and 4th grade learn how to play the recorder in music class each year. The recorder is a terrific instrument for applying the concepts of beat, rhythm, pitch, and melody that they've learned in TK-2nd grade.
Our students would benefit greatly from a brand new set of Yamaha recorders that they would be able to take home and practice!
The practice time at home allows them to progress and earn different colored belts for each song that they are able to master. This is part of our Recorder Karate curriculum and has been a terrific resource in motivating the students to practice their instrument and their growth mindset!
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
