I'm a 6th grade English teacher in a small town in Central Missouri. I have the immense pleasure of teaching the most amazing students. Many come to school to learn, but most come to school to be loved by our teachers in my district. I love my job because it allows me to be a positive role model to our students and show them that will hard work and perseverance, they can rise above and achieve their goals. I am inspired by my students every single day and am thankful they keep me up to date on the latest dance moves. My students love to read, work together, and participate in activities. They are the most generous, loving students and I want to provide them with a classroom that fully meets their learning needs.
My Project
As a teacher of 85 amazing 6th graders, my classroom quickly runs out of basic supplies like pencils, paper, permanent markers, and dry-erase markers. These supplies help me bring creative, fun, and engaging activities to them each day, including activities on our hanging whiteboards that span three walls of my classroom. I am a new teacher who is resourceful and can work with what I have, but in most cases, students do need these basic supplies to enhance learning opportunities.
Unfortunately, many of my students cannot always afford to buy new cases of pencils and packs of lined paper, so it's important to me that I can meet their basic needs at school.
No pencil? No paper? No problem! Of course accountability and preparedness is an important life skill, but nevertheless, I never want to punish my students who are unprepared for class due to financial hardships at home. When they are at school, they are safe. They are provided for. They are cared for. I want each of my students to feel supported and understood when they are in my room.
My class was fortunate enough to receive a grant early this year that allowed us to get rid of all but three desks! My students snow sit at tables on comfortable chairs, stools, and yoga balls. A small portion of this grant would allow me to add another yoga ball to provide another flexible seating option for my wigglers.
