Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Physical Education is meant to be high-energy, fast-paced, and most of all, fun. My "classroom" is outdoors on our recess field as our school building does not have a functioning gymnasium. In my class we play games, learn skills, and strive to be physically active for the entire period of class.
My school is a first-year public charter school in Nevada.
At the moment, we rent our facility and the building we use does not have a proper gymnasium. Therefore, we have our Physical Education classes outside on a giant field. An essential part of our charter is the focus on multiculturalism; a focus that is made manifest in our student body. Our students represent many ethnicity and cultural backgrounds and speak a variety of languages. Our students also live with a wide range of financial security with some students coming from upper-class families while many others come from at-risk homes of lower-class situations. My students are fun-loving and happy. They absolutely love Physical Education and they love to participate; even in the hot, summer sun. My students are great kids who are just happy to have fun, colorful equipment to play with during P.E. and recess. They are the happiest group of people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
My Project
I am requesting 2 soccer goals and 36 training cones. We wanted to use our original school budget to buy the widest variety of Physical Education equipment that we could. This meant that we had to sacrifice a few things in order to increase our variety. One of these sacrifices was legitimate soccer goals. Soccer is the favorite game amongst the students and we typically use small cones or other equipment to mark the goals when we play. These goals would be put to use immediately at recess, but most importantly, as we begin to teach soccer skills as part of a Physical Education unit. We will have a soccer unit for all students in the school but also use soccer games as a fitness warm-up to other activities and as a positive reward for good class behavior. Goals are a great way to teach students about accomplishments and purpose and these soccer goals would be a great addition to our school.
We are a first year school and we have had to make many adjustments and sacrifices based on budgetary restrictions and prioritized objectives.
I have plenty of soccer balls and even more soccer players who love to play the game. With these goals, I can more adequately teach the game to these students. They will be able to gain a complete understanding and their skills will improve dramatically. These goals will be used in after school programs as well to give them extra-curricular activities.
