According to the Center for Disease Control Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period. Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults 11-14 and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
At our College Preparatory School serving grades 4-6, we strive to combat the childhood obesity epidemic by providing a rigorous physical education program to help all students develop health-related fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding, and positive attitudes about physical activity.
A major component of our physical education program includes the incorporation of sports and sports related physical activity. Research studies at Michigan State University show that children who participate in sports tend to do better in school, and are less likely to engage in drug and alcohol abuse.
My students need seven soccer balls and two primed youth soccer goals. Over 60% of my students were considered obese according to last year's school wide BMI statistics. We have made it our mission to combat this epidemic by engaging in vigorous sports related physical activities while understanding the relationship between sports and the five components of fitness.
Prior to the end of this fall semester I surveyed students in grades 4, 5, and 6 and soccer was a sport that students were excited to engage in.
I have a three week lesson plan for the spring 2017 semester that introduces soccer drills, fundamentals, and games, but unfortunately we lack the equipment needed to complete this unit.
Donations for this project will not only improve my classroom by providing tools needed to improve students overall quality of life through active play, but will also help introduce an activity students can play to increase aerobic capacity and cardiovascular health.
