This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What do you like to do for entertainment? Movies? Golf? Fishing? Bowling? These are basic activities many of us take for granted. Movies and bowling have been part of American culture for decades. I recently discovered that three of my 5th graders have never seen a movie in a theater!

My students live in an impoverished area in a metropolitan setting in Oklahoma.

Culturally speaking they are diverse, but that is as far as their diversity goes. Their life experiences are limited when they come to school. Some move around quite a bit, but that is due to lack of rent money, not experiencing new horizons. When they move it is to another impoverished area, thus their life experiences remain limited. Our school gives some advantages in that we provide ALL of their supplies, plus every student receives breakfast in the classroom as well as free lunch daily. This, hopefully, eliminates those obstacles from their learning for the day. As a school we try to provide as much as our students will need to succeed, not only for the day, or for next year, but for life. We try to open doors for them that they may not even know are there. Most of our students are enthusiastic about learning; those that seem not to be, actually have other issues that they are dealing with.

My Project

Our school is a "Healthy Lifestyles" school. This means we receive grant money for our local health department to come into our building and work with our students, their families and teachers to teach them about healthy living. In an impoverished area, healthy choices in food and activities are not readily made. Our PE teacher has an opportunity to teach bowling to our students. As a closing activity for this unit a trip to a bowling alley is provided. This is often the only time any of our students have seen not only a bowling alley, but extended parts of their home town! However, due to the economic status, our district has cut transportation funding for field trips. The bowling alley will still provide the lanes, but we need to get there! That is why I am asking for bus money to take our students on this seemingly simple adventure!

As I stated earlier, many of our students have never seen a movie inside a movie theater.

They have not visited a museum located 4 miles from our school, or even been through the neighborhood it is located in! Many have not been across town, and we do not live in a huge city. Their world is limited. This seems to be a simple, non important trip to take, going to a bowling alley. However, it gives them an experience of inexpensive, safe entertainment, not far from home.
