Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school where the majority of our students are bussed in from various surrounding cities. Some students spend over an hour in a bus, just to come to class. They come from all ethnicities and cultures as well as financial backgrounds.

They come into class never really knowing what is going to happen, looking for a safe place and someone that they can talk to without judgement.

Our students are eager to learn and participate in activities that are exciting and different. They are exposed to other cultures and learn about acceptance. Through the Music Program, they learn how teamwork works and cooperate with students from various grade levels.

My Project

GMS is a Title 1 school that relies heavily on funding and grants from outside sources. Donations are a huge reason why some of the programs are able to function as well as they are currently.

There is no money available for a Musical Theater program.

This is a relatively new program that we have to fund-raise or use our own money to get supplies. Donors Choose is allowing us to bring Musical Theater to life for the students and their families in ways that as a teacher, I am not able to do.

My students will be using items from this project for costumes for our upcoming performance. Many students come from families struggling enough already, so it will be wonderful to be able to provide them costume materials and make it one less thing that they have to worry about.
