Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from many different neighborhoods and have diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. They are drawn to our school from all over the city by our school's STEAM theme. Although many students specifically choose our school because they are interested in science and engineering, most of them do not have resources to explore science and engineering at home. 84% of the students at my school have free or reduced lunch, and few of my students' parents work in science. My students really need and appreciate the awesome science experiences we provide school.
My Project
My students love labs; everyone is motivated to do labs. However, many of them are wary of exams, at least when they first enter my class. I have found that flashcards and study guides dramatically increase engagement. Student think of them as a game, and struggle to best one another. Each student needs to assemble his/her own cards, to take them home and study. The result: I have engaged, charming, cheerful students, and the world's emptiest glue bin. I know that glue is a boring thing to donate, but you would be helping my kids make a ton of stuff to grow in confidence, skills, and knowledge. Thank you so much and have an awesome day!
