My Students
Due to the large size of the kindergarten classes, downsizing was a necessity. I began the year teaching 4th grade and half way through the first month of school I volunteered to be transferred to Kindergarten. My amazing wonderful kindergartens welcomed me with open arms.
My students are a wonderful mix of children from many different backgrounds.
Some have had formal school experience before and others entered a school for the first time in September. Two weeks into their kindergarten school year they were given a new classroom with a new teacher. The greatest advantage to them was that the class size was dramatically decreased. My students know that it has been eight years since I last taught Kindergarten.
My Project
In recreating a Kindergarten classroom, I have realized how different the supplies are from what I bought for my past 4th graders. Instead of notebooks, chapter books, and pens, I now wish I would have stocked up on glue sticks, picture books, and crayons. It seems that everything Kindergartners do involves glue. We glue our site words, number lines, letter sound activities, art projects, name charts and a whole lot more. I am currently down to my last box of glue sticks with many months left of school. I don't want to see my students suffer a break in their learning because of a lack of supplies.
Early childhood is the gateway to a solid education.
Students should be able to start their schooling off feeling successful. Being prepared and having available tools is essential to this success. Glue seems like a silly request with all the media hype about education, but in kindergarten glue sticks are gold sticks...we just need to have them.
