My Students
I teach in an urban area. All my students receive free lunches. They often lack the basic needs that we take for granted. They come to school hungry and unprepared to learn. Their parents can not provide them with the basic tools they need to succeed in school. Many of my students, who are only 6 years old, have already attended two or three schools.
However, they come to school curious, wanting to learn and explore, in a place that is safe and caring.I do this by creating an environment that fosters their natural love for learning, a place where they can feel secure and cared about.
My Project
My student's parents do not have the resources to buy the basic supplies their children need to make them successful in school. Students feel empowered when they have their own notebooks, folders, and glue. They smile on a six-year- old's face when you put his or her name on a folder or give them a smiley face eraser is worth a million dollars.
Moreover, as a teacher I spend my resources and money to make sure my classroom and students have the materials they need.
The school district no longer supplies us with basics, like chart paper, copy paper, and wipe-off board markers. Further, classroom essentials, such as writing journals and post-it pad (which we use to edit our writing, to graph data, and retell stories) that promote my student's educational and personal growth are no longer supplied. When students and teachers have the supplies they need they feel self-confident and one more obstacle to learning and achieving is removed.
