This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Kindergarteners are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of practice to master foundational skills like counting and number sense. Utilizing materials that students can hold, move, and manipulate helps them to comprehend number relationships, counting, and place value.

When students have the opportunity to count objects and use a variety of tools to organize , order numbers, and count, they build number sense.

A surefire way to get students amped up and excited about math is to make math glow. Black light math projects will include snowflake gem counting, snow man addition and subtraction, and people multiplication. Under the soft glow of the black lights, students will count the adhesive gems, as they create symmetry on snowflakes. They will add funny faces to characters and use number stickers, to show how many characters they drew. Thew will create snowmen using the snowmen face stickers and then compare buttons on snowmen, and explore the ideas of addition and subtraction with snowman buttons. The pencils will allow them to record mathematical equations as they discover how addition and subtraction works.

The art experiences in this project will help students build an understanding of number order, greater than, less than, and equal to, one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, conservation, subtilizing, estimating, skip counting, and flexible thinking. Students will use these tools to help them build a visual understanding of number concepts by counting, adding, subtracting, and comparing.
