This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade are so creative and always ready to dive into the world of art, use their imaginations, and create something new and wonderful for others to see. Although we always wish we had more time together we make the best of the time we get and they work hard to create something that they are proud of.

My students are grateful to have an art education and want to continue to learn new skills and create new artworks in our classroom.

For the majority of my students the time I have in art with them is the only exposure they have to art. The vast majority of my students are from low-income households and live in various apartments within walking distance of our Title I school. Also, for most of them, taking care of their families during this pandemic takes priority over other matters and they do not have much opportunity or materials to create art at home. While in class, I want to provide a fun, artistic, and creative environment where they can learn and feel free to express themselves.

My Project

The past couple of years have been tough with Hurricane Harvey destroying our school, moving to new building locations twice, and then having a pandemic change the world as we knew it. My students and I have made it through it all with the help of art and each other. We are finally in our new building and all together in-person! With all the fluorescent paint materials and black lights we will be able to create artwork, learn about new artists, and experience creating art in a new way. We will then share it virtually with the community since we are still living through this pandemic. The crochet materials will be used to learn to crochet! This will be a challenging and rewarding experience for my students. The skills they learn through crochet will be used to create items for themselves and the community. Also, through crochet they will gain a new way to relax and reduce stress they may feel with our changing world.

My hope is to inspire my students to be creative wherever life leads them and to continue to learn from new experiences.
