My Students
My 4th grade students attend a very small, rural Pennsylvania school. Many of my students come from low-socioeconomic families and a large population of our school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. As educators, we feel that it is our responsibility to not only teach our students to be great learners but to be great citizens and leaders as well. Building a classroom community is one of the most important things a teacher can do because it has such a strong correlation to student academic achievement and emotional well-being. In the same way that we provide direct instruction in mathematics and language arts, I believe we should provide the same in character education. The future of our world rests in the hands of our children!
Through the pandemic, my students have faced innumerable changes and disappointments, all with being patient and adaptive to whatever is thrown at them.
The past few years in education have been like no other. They have missed out on so much, but remained positive and resilient through it all. They deserve to celebrate for persevering through such uncharted times in education!
My Project
Do you ever recall having 'Glow Day' at school? I'm sure you haven't, but would remember it if you did! I envision creating a glowing learning environment on the dark days of winter to illuminate our learning spirit!
During a 'Glow Day' all subject areas would be taught under black light using glowing materials.
All students would be asked to come to school wearing white or neon colors, be given highlighters to write with, and spend the day engaged in a variety of cooperative activities to reward their efforts and rejuvenate their motivation to create! I have plans for glowing writing activities, flashlight reading, cooperative recess games, hand-on math projects, and even glowing science experiments. I am asking for black lights, a power tower, indoor cooperative recess games, glow-in-the-dark paints and party supplies, finger flashlights, neon tape, and a bulk pack of glow sticks to bring my vision to life.
I know that this resource breaks the mold of traditional classroom teacher requests, but it would be such a relief knowing that I have the equipment I need to emotionally and educationally support my students for years to come. We will dig into the depths of learning in a party-like atmosphere that my students will never forget!
