My Project
I would like to support students with developing the knowledge and skills necessary to improve their ability to practice healthy self-care habits. I serve high school students in an urban school setting and many of our students encounter high levels of stress and anxiety which impacts their ability to adequately focus and engage in school.
Teaching students about mindfulness meditation and candle making with various essential oils can help students to use these strategies as a form of self-care.
One of the most well-established benefits of mindfulness meditation is its ability to reduce stress. Studies have shown that mindfulness can lower cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, helping to calm the mind and body. By focusing on the present moment, individuals can distance themselves from stressors and learn to respond to them more calmly.
Additionally, essential oils such as, lavender, frankincense, and chamomile are known for their ability to reduce stress and anxiety. More specifically, lavender's soothing aroma can help lower cortisol levels, induce a sense of calm, and promote restful sleep. Additionally, frankincense and sandlewood are commonly used during meditation for their grounding and calming properties.
My ultimate goal is to support students in learning different self-care strategies to more effectively manage their feelings of stress and anxiety and to improve their overall health and well-being.
