My Students
I teach first grade in a small farming town in Illinois. We have such a diverse student population. On one side of town, we have students who come from half-million-dollar homes and on the other side of town, students who come from public-housing situations. 30% of our student population receives free and reduced lunch and school fees. My goal for all my students is to give each and every one of them the same opportunity to learn with every advantage possible.
If I can accomplish one thing in the short time I have my students, it would be that know that I truly love and value them as individuals.
My Project
After attending an amazing conference about how to engage students without sacrificing rigor, I want to give my students a day of GLOW GAMES! These games are designed to engage students while they review difficult content.
I feel when students are presented with a difficult concept, rather than buckle down and push them to frustration, I want to get them excited to learn the difficult concept.
Imagine walking into your classroom only to find it has been completely transformed for the day. The room is dark, but everything is glowing neon. As you enter the room your teacher's hands you glow stick bracelets and glasses. How excited you would be to start learning?
Students will be using blacklight flashlights to find secret problems around the room to solve, they will toss glow rings around the post of a correct answer, play a giant game of Vocab Jenga, and glow math bowling after I place glow sticks inside a gerbil ball and empty water bottles. The games and possibilities are endless!
