Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Anyone who walks into our school building feels a unique sense of community. The students at my school are highly motivated to learn and be creative. They are well behaved with the support of teachers who are willing to collaborate with the best interest of the students in mind. Our school is 76% Hispanic and we work hard to teach the English language. More importantly, my school is Title I with 94% of the students on free or reduced priced lunch. In addition, we have been impacted by a recent influx of students impacted by Hurricane Maria.

Students love coming to music each week to be energized by singing, moving, or playing instruments.

Most of the time, music is a breath of fresh air for some of the struggling students because it is the “universal” language. In the past, we have been known as a STEM school. With that, there is a great deal of emphasis on using technology within the classroom to help the students learn.

My Project

Over the past few years, my classes have grown. Unfortunately, we have a limited number of instruments for students to play. Since I see every student once a week, some classes are combined. I can have up to 28 students in one class. This makes it challenging to get all students playing on an instrument together. When this happens I accommodate by using drums and other small percussion. I also happen to have an old and broken glockenspiel that I use as a last resort.

Having an extra glockenspiel in the classroom will make all of the difference.

With this new instrument, I will be able to have a way to spread students out so that they don't have to share or use unsatisfactory alternatives. Students will all get to play on the same kind of instrument, and it will help keep the students engaged in the activities we are doing. Every student will benefit from having this new instrument to play.

Having this instrument in my classroom will also be helpful for my special needs students. These students come with a paraprofessional who helps them throughout the lesson. This small, easy to play, and very portable instrument can be used by these students in a way that gives them space to explore and still be a part of the whole group at the same time.
