My Students

Can you imagine the magic of a classroom of students playing on xylophones as they sing and move to the words of a well known children's book such as In the Tall Tall Grass? I incorporate children's literature, movement, and dance with my music students. However, we need more instruments!

I teach general music to students in grades pre-K to 8 at 2 public schools in metropolitan Illinois.

The school where this proposal is intended for has a low income rate of over 85%, and a high percentage of the students families speak Spanish. A majority of families lack resources to pay for private music lessons outside of school, so for most students music class will be the only music instruction they receive. Students are inquisitive, curious, and eager to participate in music activities such as performing, dancing, and composing.

My Project

For this proposal I am requesting 3 glockenspiels, which are similar to small xylophones. The glockenspiels will be used in Orff Schulwerk based classroom activities where students perform music based on language, children's rhymes, and stories. Having the additional instruments will allow even more children to participate. Students will learn to play chords, intervals, and scales on the glockenspiels. When they perform as an ensemble, some students will perform movements as well.

The donation of glockenspiels will allow children in grades K-5 to experience play, creativity, and spontaneity as they perform, create and learn about music in lessons based on National Music Standards.

Lessons will also be based on Orff Shulwerk philosophy. Thank you for your donation!
