I am a sixth grade social studies teacher at the Secondary School for Law, in Brooklyn, NY.
I teach both world history (Eastern Hemisphere) and law. One thing my classroom lacks are globes. My school is 6-12, so teachers often get together by subject area to discuss what skills are students need (and lack) at different grade levels. Our middle and high school students lack geography skills (I understand that this is a nation-wide problem). I do my best with my wall map and text to help my students understand the world in spatial terms, but I think a globe would be better in developing this skill. For example, before I begin a unit on China, I could have my students trace a route from their city (Brooklyn) to China. Before my unit on democracy in ancient Greece, they can do the same. They could trace the silk trade route, or get a better understanding about the Age of Discovery.
I really believe globes will better prepare my students for their upper-level social studies courses. As a teacher, I cringe when I hear stories about American students not being able to find England on a map. Your donation could really help me help my students.
