This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you went outside during science class and actually tested areas just like real scientists? Many of my students have never done this and constantly are forced to do "paper labs" in science class because we don't have the proper equipment.
I teach 10th and 11th grade underprivileged/ low income students.
They attend a small young school in a city and are not easily motivated. The failing rates have increased year after year because the students give up when they don't understand and sometimes don't even try when they aren't interested. I'm hoping to both challenge and interest my students with some hands on activities such as water quality testing on various rivers throughout the city.
My Project
I am requesting a water quality testing kit and a turbidity tube. This kit will be the backbone of my expedition for my 11th grade environmental class. This is the first year I will be teaching this course and I thought the most exciting way to start it would be to give students lab materials to do various experiments and then to later create their own experiments. My goal is to have students learn how to create questions, gather data and analyze results. This will hopefully create a passion in many students for real hands-on science. This project will also prepare students for college since this is the type of work I did in detail during my junior year in college. I guarantee students will enjoy it and gain many scientific skills they need for the future.
This project will give students skills they need to succeed in any future profession.
They will learn how to question various concepts; how to collect and graph data both by hand and in excel; and last but not least, they will learn how to write more efficiently through discussion and analysis sections of lab reports.
