"We are smart, we are capable, and we will ace this!" is a mantra my students repeat often. Many of my students walk into my classrooms classified by the school district with up to 8 "at-risk" factors. These risk factors include still learning English, coming from an economically disadvantaged household, already failing a state standardized test, and more. Despite the many risk factors in my room (which now includes overcoming Hurricane Harvey), my students show me day after day they are ready to rise above any and all expectations.
My school works hard to create a community where students and teachers love to be, and students love to learn.
As a result, students pour their hearts into the projects we set up, using any and all resources we have available. In order to meet the demands of the 21st century, my classroom needs more technology to make our classroom experiences more relevant to the current status of our world. These pieces of technology will help my students take the lessons we learn in the classroom and apply them in the globally-minded City of Houston, Texas.
My Project
My school is an International Baccalaureate school, which means that we take state-mandated curriculum and apply it to a global context. In order to make this meaningful for students, we often research current events and world history that relates to our units of inquiry. This project will give my students a more hands-on experience with their research into classroom projects. The technology will also provide students with more opportunities to research and create presentations that relate to their own personal wonderings and interests. My hope is that the Chromebooks will empower students to become independent life long learners and equip them with better research and communication skills to meet the demands of the 21st century job market.
