My Students
My students live in the impoverished neighborhood of Logan in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many of them are in the foster care system or are being raised by someone who is not their mother or father. For many of them, school is the only safe haven they know. I want to be able to provide them with texts that broaden their understanding of the world beyond the reaches of their neighborhood.
By helping fund my project, you are helping 70 brilliant adolescents build both their literacy skills and their confidence in navigating the ever changing world around them.
My Project
The 15 copies of Call of the Wild will allow my students to have access to a complete class set of the text (30 books). This text will give my students an opportunity to learn about one of the most ravenous lands in the world and the struggles both man and animal had to overcome in order to survive.
The 80 copies of A Long Walk To Water will allow all of my seventh graders a chance to participate in an interactive novel study.
Many of my students do not read on grade level, and this text lends itself to be leveled up and down depending on a students particular abilities. The culturally relevance of this text is of paramount importance and gives educators an excellent chance use that relevancy (and the engagement and motivation that follows) to open our students eyes to global issues that are still prevalent in today's world.
