Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. My students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new every day even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. That said, all of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectual and professional.

My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.

Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to society's most marginalized students.

My Project

The Global Regents is a very difficult exam. Students in NYC, particularly Title I students, struggle with the width and scope of the required content. My students have created wonderful History Portfolios (thanks to DonorsChoose.org) and will use those as historical anchors as we navigate the multiple choice and two required essays. My students will create study cards so that they can study key vocabulary terms/concepts/people on the train during their commute and at home.

The highlighters and pens will be used to help instruct students on how to highlight key terms/ideas in the Harvard outlines they have already created.

My students must engage the material in many different ways in order to retain the volume of content. This group of sophomores has worked very hard all year and I am very hopeful about the prospects for their success. This mini-grant will support them in this most important endeavor.

Your generous donation will support my students as they prepare for the Global Regents exam. Your kindness in supporting this mini-grant will give my students the ability to take ownership of their work and prepare for this very difficult exam. This mini-grant has proved incredibly helpful in the past and the students willingly carry their study cards with them to and from school. Lastly, this mini-grant also reinforces the History Portfolio Project wherein the students organized all of their Harvard outlines for the year in one place.
