My Students
We are a small K-5 school filled with students who are wonderful to work with! They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, income, gender, and ability levels, all looking for a chance to be successful. I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that nudge.
Many of the students struggle with issues adults couldn't deal with, but still, find a way to come to school and participate in the learning process.
We are a family of learners, myself included. Every day is a new day of learning, loving, and respecting each other. We are an awesome community working hard at being the best that we can be!
My Project
For the past few years, Global Read Aloud, where students all over the world read the same book, has bought an amazing array of diverse characters into our classroom.
While participating in Global Read Aloud, we have immersed ourselves in books with characters from all over the world.
We have learned new words and customs, as well as experienced the obstacles and opportunites these characters have faced.
What better way to get my students to understand that the world is a big place, and that so many different people inhabit it? Yet, there are also so many things that we all have in common.
And to top it off, my students are reading and connecting with others who are reading the same book. They get to have their own copy of the book, (which they love),enjoy a great story, and "meet" someone who does not look like them, but is just like them in so many ways. We are looking forward to reading the novel, "Indian No More" and seeing what we learn from this new character!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
