My Project

Each year, my class participates in the Global Read Aloud. The goal of this wonderful program is "One Book to Connect the World." It lasts for six weeks in the fall. This year's Picture Book Creator chosen is the author and illustrator Oge Mora. Each week, we will read one of her picture books and then make connections with other classes also participating. In the past, we've Zoomed with classes in North Carolina, Canada, Pakistan, and shared artwork through email with students in Tanzania. We've written postcards to other classes throughout the world.

Each book that we read and discuss has characters and themes that allow the students to have a chance to think about who they are as individuals and how they interact with others.

We will read about fourteen young women who changed the world, including poems about Ruby Bridges, Mary Anning, Malala Yousafzai, and Mae Jemison; ordinary small moments that shape a boy's day; a mother and daughter spending time together on a Saturday; a grandmother that makes the best smelling stew and ends up sharing it with her community; how one is never too old to learn as we hear the true story of Mary Walker and how she learned to read at the age of 116; and a chain reaction that happens in an apartment building when everyone is woken up and needs to settle back down to fall asleep.

At the end of our book project, we will try collage art, which is the style that our author/illustrator uses in her books. With the gift of these books and art supplies, we will be all set for the Global Read Aloud!
