Each year my class participates in the Global Read Aloud. The goal of this wonderful program is "One Book to Connect the World." It lasts for six weeks in the fall. This year's Picture Book Creator that was chosen is the author Minh Le. Each week we will read one of his picture books and then make connections with other classes also participating. In the past we've Zoomed with classes in North Carolina, Canada, Pakistan, and shared art work through email with students in Tanzania. We've written postcards to other classes throughout the world.
Each book that we read and discuss has characters and themes that allow the students to have a chance to think about who they are as individuals and how they interact with others.
We will read about:
a boy and his grandfather that don't share a common language but realize they can communicate through drawings,
a girl that likes to push buttons on her apartment elevator and discovers she can go to magical places and share them with her brother,
two friends that love to build things but their friendship is put to the test when their latest creation falls down,
navigating the loss of an imaginary friend but discovering new friends around the corner,
a child with superhero-like qualities and the parents that have to keep up with her, and
the joy of reading a new book but having interruptions by others that try to spoil the ending.
The Keva building planks will go along with the book "Built to Last". This book focuses on friendship and imagination. The students in my class will be able to build creations just like the characters in the book.
With the gift of these books and building blocks we will be all set for the Global Read Aloud!
