My Students
We are a small K-5 school filled with students who are wonderful to work with! They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, income, gender, and ability levels, all looking for a chance to be successful. I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that nudge.
Many of them struggle with issues adults couldn't deal with, but still find a way to come to school and participate in the learning process.
We are a family of learners, myself included. Every day is a new day of learning, loving, and respecting each other. We are an awesome community working hard at being the best that we can be!
My Project
Individual copies of "The Wild Robot" will provide each student with their own book. A copy of their own creates a sense of ownership and a greater interest in reading the book.
Reading a great story is the gateway to getting students to read more!
The students will follow along as I read the story aloud. Every year the Global Read Aloud projects book helps my students understand the joy of reading!
They take the books home, and read it with family, friends, or on their own. They participate in discussions about the story online and/or face to face with classes all over the country and world.
They share their thoughts on their blogs, post and add to discussions via Schoology, create presentations using a variety of tech tools, and interact as we read with other classes via Skype and/or Google Hangout. I am looking forward to the critical thinking these collaborations will provoke!
The donation of "The Wild Robot" will improve my classroom because it gives them a book of their own that they share with the world! It will change my students' lives because they come to understand that books are not the enemy, books are their friends. This will lead them to seek out more great stories, and thus, become better, more proficient readers.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
