My Students
Like most students, our students are facing many new challenges as a result of the Covid-19 virus. Our students are working remotely from home, Zooming in to conferences and meetings with their teacher and peers, and balancing their physical and mental health.
Our school has about half of our students coming from low-income backgrounds, and there are great disparities in access to devices, WiFi, and other educational resources.
We are working to accommodate students without tools for online learning at home, and trying to encourage as much connection as possible for all students.
My Project
As part of our Montessori curriculum, we focus on the fundamental needs of humans and patterns of human migration. These provide a backbone for how to approach history and culture studies, and open doors for students to compare and contrast different time periods, groups of people, and patterns.
In this unprecedented time, we are more connected than ever and it is important for students to understand and connect migration of the past and present to our future.
This project includes picture books, chapter books, poetry, and graphic novels that include migration stories from all over the world. These books were chosen as part of a seminar on Globalizing Children’s Literature with a Focus on Migration put on by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Education.
