Global Learning and Understanding Through Non-Fiction and Fiction Books

Help me give my students a set of books, both non-fiction and fiction, to help them understand the lives of kids their age from around the world.

My Students

Greetings, potential donors! My name is Mrs. S. and I am a middle school teacher. My first four years of teaching were at the elementary level. I have been at the middle school level teaching Social Studies for four years and I am in the middle of my second year as a middle school Communications and Multimedia teacher.

The school where I teach is a Title I school, with roughly half of the students on free and reduced lunch.

While the school has made huge successes over the past few years, there is always room for improvement. I will be teaching roughly 100 7th grade students in a social studies classroom and about 30 students in my communications course.

My Project

With as global as the world seems, my fellow social studies teachers and I have noticed that there seems to be a disconnect with the global news and our own personal lives. Many students hear of a story from far across the globe and think, "Yeah, but that wouldn't happen here." We have planned a unit based around War and Peace from around the world. We will teach geography through different concepts such as Globalization, War and Peace, and Equality, just to name a few.

These fiction and non-fiction books will bring the stories of children and teens from around the world right to the classroom.

The news rarely covers individual stories, so these books are a view inside the lives of kids going through various experiences.

These books will not only support our social studies curriculum but will help support ELA standards as well as SEL topics.
