Remember what it was like being a young child thinking the world was your oyster? Thinking if only I had that telescope I could study the stars at night when everyone went to sleep. Well, I don't want my students to wonder what if they had, this or that. I want them to be able to have what they need.
My students are amazing kids with wild dreams.
As a teacher, I want to cultivate a classroom that allows them to take those dreams and make them a reality. When students come to kindergarten they face many challenges, some are younger, some are older - however, at this stage in their lives they have not developed at the same speed.
Incorporating art into my classroom gives all my students a chance to feel empowered. It gives them a sense of pride to have a project they worked hard on that requires nothing more than using their active imaginations. When a kid can't read, they feel bad, when they cant hold a pencil they feel even worse. Giving students another outlet to make them feel amazing is what I want to do.
Through art I can show all of my students that they can achieve monumental success with a little creativity and getting a little bit messy. I want to bring a tangible reality to everyone, because every kid should feel that they are only an idea away from a great product.
My Project
My students will begin to see how they are all different and that just because you can't read, write, count, or anything else they feel like they cannot do, they can still feel good about doing work in the classroom. I want to help build self-esteem. All too often I hear kids saying they cannot do certain things; I want to change that. I want all kids to see all of the things they really can do, just using a different medium.
With these supplies I plan on making counting books and story books. I plan on having the kids paint pictures, then taking those pictures and turning them into stories. I plan on group activities so that the kids feel a sense of need within a group and hope to create challenging and engaging art projects that will help scaffold the children to progress further. I aim to cultivate a love of learning through different channels, because I feel that if a student loves to learn they will able to overcome any obstacle that they may face in the future.
My project is important because teaching through art has so many strong points.
Visual learners see the aesthetic of an object and it draws them into it and they want to create something like it, with a sense of meaning and purpose.
