Help me give my students : ceramic tiles, glazes, brushes, a slab roller, clay modeling tools, plastic trays with covers, underglaze pencils, transfer paper to transfer their designs to the tile, tile holders and kiln shelf supports.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The children here are part of a very special community where everyone knows each other and it feels like family. Our school is a Title I, bilingual elementary school (grades Pre-K through 5th) with a high percentage of children from low-income families. Some of my students are not English speakers and as a result find a different way to communicate and express themselves through art. Many of the students that struggle with the academic classes, find success in my classroom.
My art lessons incorporate many of the other academic strands, as a result the students review many of the concepts learned in the other disciplines.
Through this grant, I will be able to obtain materials and tools for the students to decorate their clay project and complete a collaborative clay tile project that will beautify our school.
My Project
The inspiration for this project came from the children's book, “Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match/Marisol McDonald No Combina,” a bilingual book about a young girl who isn’t afraid to be herself. The book celebrates her individuality and ethnic diversity.
I would like "Glaze It- Ceramic Selfies" to be a school-wide project where all students will glaze a ceramic tile after reading the book.
A discussion will be held with children about their individuality and they will brainstorm ideas about what makes them unique. After a lesson about proper proportions in portraits, the students will create a drawing of their self-portrait surrounded by symbols that represent their individuality and identity. They will then transfer their drawing to the ceramic tile and will glaze it. After all of the tiles are fired, they will be arranged collaboratively to create a mural to beautify the school.
The students will also create a clay slab self-portrait which they will be able to take home. The slabs will be created using the slab roller, which is used to get the clay to the thickness it needs to be to survive the firing process. A slab roller in an elementary classroom is an essential tool for a clay program.
