G.L.A.M.S: Girls Leading and Making Success!!!!

My students need three books in sets of 15 copies each that are directly related to their experiences as young girls.

My Students

We girls have to stick together!!! It can be rough being a young, black girl on the South Side of Chicago. G.L.A.M.S. gives girls an opportunity to have a voice, be listened to, and build self confidence.

These fifteen girls are part of a mentoring program that is geared towards helping them build self esteem and gives them a safe space to talk about things that are impacting their lives.

The girls are in the fifth and sixth grade and transitioning to middle school. The school exists on the south side of Chicago and the girls have a lot of things that are happening to them and around them. G.L.A.M.S. gives them an opportunity to be a kid, learn and discuss topics and situations that are important to them, and have fun.

My Project

The requested books will provide a context for discussions about the changes that are occurring with their bodies, dealing with their feelings and learning how to be better friends to each other. The girls will spend time reading, reflecting, and journaling about things that are going on at home and at school. Activities will be planned to align to the topics that are in each text that will give students opportunities for building life skills.

Donations to this project will give the girls G.L.A.M.S.

an opportunity to own texts that are directly related to them and belong to them. The girls will not only use the texts on a consistent basis, but will have the books to keep for their own reference when needed.
