This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 9th grade English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students are motivated learners who are navigating not only the high school curriculum but also a new language and culture. They bring unique perspectives and are eager to share their ideas, but often lack the tools to effectively communicate their thoughts and demonstrate their understanding. I am requesting three iPads with a separate microphone to provide my students with essential tools for language acquisition and academic growth. These devices will be used to improve pronunciation and fluency; enhance speaking and listening skills, facilitate academic writing, and promote collaboration and confidence. The microphone function will allow students to record themselves reading aloud, practicing conversational dialogues, or repeating vocabulary words. This gives them the opportunity for immediate self-assessment and personalized practice to refine their pronunciation and improve reading fluency. Students will use the iPads to create audio journals, record presentations, or participate in podcasting projects. These activities encourage low-stakes speaking practice and develop listening comprehension by having students listen to their own recordings and those of their peers. The voice-to-text feature will be a game-changer for my students. It allows them to bypass the common struggles of typing and spelling in a new language, enabling them to articulate their ideas fluently. They can then go back and edit their work, focusing on grammar and syntax rather than the physical act of writing, which greatly accelerates their writing skills. The iPads will enable collaborative group projects where students can create multimedia presentations, video stories, or interview one another. This fosters a collaborative learning environment and builds the confidence needed to speak and present in English.
