Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten classroom is part of a Title I school in Connecticut. The demographic of our school is predominately Spanish speaking and with that many students come to school knowing little to no English. Many families in our community have limited incomes, which keep them from many scholastic purchases for their children and from continuing education at home.

It is important that I expose my students to as much as I possibly can during the school hours.

As a teacher of young students I need to be creative and animated, adding the challenge of a language barrier increases to the importance of engaging students with their learning. Although learning can be challenging at times , my students work hard and never stop trying. The sky is the limit and I am confident that the future of America is in my classroom!

My Project

It has been proven through studies that students in kindergarten should get exposure to 12 new books, at their instructional reading level, every week. Although books can be rotated through my students book bags on a weekly basis, it is difficult to give them new books each time when we have such a limited supply. Especially when students continue on the same reading level, they begin to memorize the words in books instead of actually decoding them.

Adding leveled books to our classroom library will give students the opportunity to learn about new subject matter, a better chance of finding a book they are interested in, and more exposure to develop their decoding and comprehension skills.

By the end of Kindergarten students are expected to read and comprehend a D Level book (based on Fountas & Pinnell's BAS used in my school).

Most of my students come from Spanish speaking homes and while they are learning their academics they are also trying to understand and use the English language. Most students who enter kindergarten do not know their letters and sounds or basic book handling skills (where the front cover is, reading left to right, return sweep, etc.) and adding a language barrier makes literacy all the more difficult. The more exposure they have to books at their instructional reading level, the more likely they will be to reach and surpass the standards set for them.
