My Students
My students often begin school only days after entering the Unites States. For many, their entry into school is their first experience with American culture, academics, and the English language. Imagine starting school and not being able to understand what is being said and not being able to make yourself understood!
I teach in a Title I school with a high immigrant/low income population.
My students are incredibly hard-working and creative. It's a joy to help them achieve their best.
My Project
This year my school has decided not to ask students (and parents) to provide supplies for learning. The school will provide notebooks, pencils and the like but was unable to locate the right protractors when they were ordering. The notebooks are wonderful tools for doing math (Math teachers will understand.). A quad notebook helps students to line up numbers, create drawings and models, graph ideas... the uses are limitless.
Quad notebooks can be expensive but they make a world of difference for students.
Imagine lining up numbers by place value, subtracting with regrouping and putting the 1 in the correct place, creating models for multiplication, showing division, making a histogram or line plot and putting the data above the correct values.
Under normal circumstances asking my students to provide these tools is difficult. This year these are the only items they need that will not be provided for them. Please consider making this difference for my students.
