My Project
Background: My name is Macey Wecker, and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and an Augmentative and Alternative Communication coordinator and specialist.
I am asking for donations to support my Tier 3 Autism and Life Skills students in getting Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices to utilize during the waiting period for insurance to cover a personal device (waiting time of 6-9 months).
After the student gets their insurance device, the iPad will be used with another student in need, and the cycle will continue. Eventually, I hope to have many more than just 2 iPads in the cycle, but this will be a strong start.
I currently work with Tier 3 Autism and Tier 3 Life Skills Programs throughout my school district, with a focus on the elementary programs. Given their varying diagnoses, many of my students have remained non-verbal over the years, and the prognosis for developing language is poor. My goal is to be able to provide them with a device while they are waiting for their insurance-funded device to arrive, which will allow them to have a voice to meet their needs/wants, interact with others socially, comment/request/protest, etc.
