"Closing the loop" - that's a common phrase used to describe one of the many benefits of composting. In short, it describes a system that is circular, where nutrients are recycled and reused in a continuous cycle. This is in contrast to a system where scraps are considered "waste" and end up in a landfill. This circle, this loop, is a fantastic description that not only emphasizes the importance of composting, but matches the style of the composter that we hope to bring to our school -- a rotating tumbler! Where food waste is placed into a drum that can then be spun in a circle, adding air and moisture so that in a few months, nutrient-rich humus can be used to grow plants, and continue the cycle.
Hands on, real world projects such as this, are truly at the heart of our school.
The environment is the lens through which our students learn, and composting can be applied to math, science, language arts, and so much more.
Once this composter is in place, not only will we me able to manage our food waste, but students will actually be a part of the process from start to finish, making it all the more valuable. We cannot wait to give this a spin!
