Giving Books a Home

My students need durable book bags to hold their Just Right books for Readers' Workshop.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Ware's classroom raised $270

This project is fully funded

My Students

Reader's Workshop happens every day for my Second grade readers, not to mention they are reading during other times of the day just because they love to read! Students are regularly opening and closing, filling and emptying their book pouches with new and exciting books to spark their interest.

My Second graders are avid readers.

They have a passion for reading and do so any chance they get. Readers fill their book pouches with 10-15 Just Right books (books at their level), Non-Fiction books and picture books every week. They read from their book pouches during Reader's Workshop as well as other times during the day. Readers are not only reading, but they are thinking and writing down their thinking on post-its. Then they share their thinking with their partner and have grand conversations about what they've read. Readers record the books they've read in a reading log inside their Reader's Notebook. All of these supplies are kept in their reading book pouch for safe and quick access.

My Project

Large plastic baggies don't offer enough protection for student books. Not only are the books too heavy for a plastic baggie, but pencils poke through and holes can damage the books. The book pouches I am requesting are durable enough to last the whole year and beyond. Pouches can be reused by future students and can be wiped down to keep them clean. For each student, a book pouch will hold 10-15 books, a Reader's Notebook, post-its, pencil, bookmarks and whatever other reading tools readers deem necessary to support them in their reading. Book pouches are kept in student desks which means they need to be able to stand up to being shuffled around and having other books and materials stacked on top of them. We emphasize that books need a home to keep them safe and the pouches are a perfect home.

These book pouches will allow students to ensure they are respecting their books by keeping them in a safe place.

The book pouches will serve as a "home" for student books and will support their reading every day in class.
