This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been blessed with the opportunity to work in the South Bronx, NY with a group of students that continue to amaze me. Just when I think that they can not meet the challenges I present to them, not only do they meet my expectations, they often exceed it. This is exactly the case when it comes to writing in my classroom.
I put a heavy focus on literacy and the art of writing a good story. I feel that if my students are able to express themselves with the written word then they will be able to achieve much in life. However, we have begun to hit a road block in our writing. The problem is two-fold. Many of my students write the way they speak. Even though they have amazing ideas, often times their grammar and spelling takes away from their amazing story line. Secondly, they always want to have their work presented as perfect as possible which means typed without mistakes. However, the one computer in my classroom is not enough for an entire class to publish their work with ease. Moreover, they often become frustrated with typing and spelling mistakes that they often times leave their work published in hand written form.
To overcome these problems, I have come up with a solution that will allow my students to be able to present their writing in a beautiful published form, while at the same time listen to what their writing sounds like to make the corrections they need. I am requesting a Notebook PC and a microphone which can be used with the PC to record my students work. This will allow my students to not only practice their speaking but help us ensure that everyone has a typed copy of their work after they have completed the writing process.
For my students creating the story is not the problem, the mechanics and oral recitation is where they struggle. I want them to be able to use the power of technology to help them not only improve their writing but to see that publishing their work can be fun too. Please consider being part of this inventive way to help develop some of the greatest writers in the Bronx!!!!
