Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are intelligent, inquisitive hard workers - given the chance, I know they will make a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE in our world. Even though most come from low-income homes and are often underestimated by society, I have some truly exceptional students who need your help!

Currently, a graphing calculator is essential for success in Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus.

In fact, it is actually a requirement to take the AP Calculus exam for college credit. Through a grant from UCLA, I was able to obtain a set of calculators for use in our classroom. They are an amazing tool but constantly RUN OUT of battery power. The average life of 4 AAA batteries in this calculator is approximately 4-6 months, since we use them so frequently. This amounts to about 200 batteries every year that I am replacing. I have been funding the batteries from my own salary, amounting to approximately $100 per year. This is a cost that neither I nor my low-income students can very easily absorb.

My Project

This technology goes BEYOND the everyday calculator, and can be used to enhance understanding, rather than replace student thought. Many may argue that calculators should not be necessary, but used properly, graphing calculators can be incredible tools for instruction, helping students to make connections and develop deeper mathematical understanding. With many software applications preloaded on the calculator, these incredible learning tools can really help students to visualize difficult abstract concepts. In lower-level classes, they are engaging tools that get students excited about the math they are learning. With thousands of different lesson plans at our fingertips, my students will grow in both their math skill level and ability to think and analyze at a college level. Your support would ensure my students are… *given access to incredible technology, *able to visualize and literally see how important abstract concepts really work, and *excited to explore and discover math!

Graphing calculators are NOT replacements for an intelligent thinking student; instead they can be intelligently used to explore and discover many mathematical concepts.

These calculators are engaging tools that really MOTIVATE and ENHANCE learning in mathematics. When using the graphing calculator, students are excited to ask “what if…” and explore beyond the problems they are given. Your support will be APPRECIATED and FULLY UTILIZED to increase the potential of some very deserving students.
