My Students

My students work through lengthy projects that ask them to explore answers to questions related to our content. When I assign work to them, they ask if they can use the Internet to search for answers. They store their files in the Cloud and work on them both at home and at school.

Our school is a K-8 focus-option public school in Portland, Oregon.

We strive to help our students become critical thinkers, courageous problem-solvers and compassionate community builders by providing classrooms that offer opportunities for students to design their own projects and find creative means of communicating their learning. Our middle school has mixed-grade classrooms that integrate language arts and social studies. My classes have a mix of sixth, seventh and eighth-graders who learn from each other and model responsibility and study skills to one another.

My Project

My students need 2 Chromebook laptops and a printer with toner. My students will use the laptops and printer to conduct research, communicate, practice typing skills, work on illustration and print their work to share. Throughout the year, my students will learn to seek out primary resources in their research. I will help teach them necessary skills for fact-finding on the Internet and assist them with organization of their digital media. Middle-school students work seamlessly with computers. Many of my students struggle to complete written work but benefit from the ability to type their assignments. They enjoy giving presentations to their classmates and appreciate using digital tools to enhance their presentations. We currently lack printers for student use, so they will use our new classroom printer to assist in sharing their work and creating fantastic displays.

When funded, this project will enhance my students' abilities to research, write, present and share.

Our new materials will make a difference by updating our classroom to fit in among the tech-savvy world in which my students live. This equipment will prepare my students for high school and beyond by helping to teach them needed technology, research, writing and presentation skills.
