Give Us a Sporting Chance - and We'll Become Great Readers

My students need single copies of 22 sports related books for our school library.

This project is fully funded

I am the librarian in a K-8 school beset with challenges including poverty, low test scores, and neighborhood violence that prevents most students from visiting the public library. I am working to build a collection that will entice my struggling readers to read.

Sports books are extremely popular. The few "good" ones I have are always checked out. Unfortunately, I have no sports titles published after the year 2000 and the most recent sports hero featured is Michael Jordan. My students constantly ask if I have anything new about sports, since they have read the books I have over and over. Reading about athletes who struggle to achieve their dreams inspires my students. They would be delighted to find books about current players and teams in our library.

The 22 titles I have requested feature today's sports heroes and would fill an important niche in our collection. These books both describe exciting game activities and emphasize the positive character traits of the athletes. I know my students, especially the boys, would keep these books flying off the shelves.

Your gift would motivate struggling readers to continue to check out and work through texts, since sports are something they truly want to know about. In addition, numerous studies show that voluntary reading improves reading ability, comprehension, and test scores - all necessary for my students to have a bright future in high school and beyond. If you help me keep them reading, they will help themselves to a better life.
