Help me give my students a few outdoor picnic tables to create a safe, multipurpose outdoor space to gather for group activities, to eat lunch with classmates, and to mentally recharge.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are responsible school and community members who aspire to become the first people in their families to graduate from a 2 or 4 year college. Within our school family, the students support each other with academic, emotional, and financial challenges while maintaining focus on their goals and dreams. My students regularly volunteer to serve our community through helping with monthly food drives, peer tutoring younger students, and gardening on our school campus using recycled and donated materials. They are actively involved in clubs, sports, band, and after school jobs. Community is central to what drives and motivates my students.
Our school is a Title I high school and 86% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The students come from diverse backgrounds and have a deep appreciation for the many cultures, languages, and home countries that make up our school community. It would be amazing to give my students a gathering place to go outside for a mental health break, to have a quiet location to work on a group project, or to take a break from the hectic overcrowded cafeteria. My students have been working to revitalize the little courtyard outside our classroom as a place to gather, read, eat, garden, and enjoy nature. Please help to give them a place to sit!
I also host a club that is run by a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering teen girls and breaking the cycle of poverty. The club meets weekly in my classroom and has 60 student members. The students often go outside to do yoga, group therapy, and other activities. We could really use some extra seating to expand the space for the afterschool extracurricular activities, too!
