My students truly need 30 engaging and educational books that will interest them in reading and help them become life-long readers!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. McAvoy's classroom raised $321

"Miss, I like reading but not these books!"
I cannot tell you how many times my students have said something like the quote above to me. It breaks my heart, but they're right. My classroom library lacks what they need: a wide selection of books they want to read. The classics I find at used book sales feel ancient and removed to my students. The solution is easy: find books that students WANT to read!
As a 11th and 12th grade English teacher, I am aiming to improve student reading levels before they take the SATs and rigorous state test this year. This will aid them in the college admission process, while simultaneously helping them gain the skills they need to succeed in college. Reading truly is essential to their future.
Studies have proven that the best way to improve student reading levels is to READ. This research and the success of former students is the reason we spend class time reading every day. As I prepared for the start of the school year, I completed an inventory of my classroom library. I know my students are motivated and committed, but they need books that will keep them interested in reading.
I am asking for thirty books by contemporary authors like Walter Dean Myers and Patricia MsCormick as well as classical authors like Toni Morrison and S. E. Hinton. These books will help students raise their reading level while engaging their interests, thereby motivating them to read more.
This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance that they realize teenagers throughout history have felt just as they do. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard.
Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature and a new world of opportunities!
